Learn Hand Spinning in Northern Ireland

Spinning is an ancient craft that has been practised for thousands of years. The spinning wheels of today have changed very little since they were first introduced in the Middle Ages. Originally, spinning was an essential method for producing yarn to create woven cloth for clothing. Nowadays, it is embraced by hobbyists and creators to produce spinning yarn for both woven cloth and knitting or crochet projects.

Spinning is a relaxing and therapeutic craft that allows you to produce yarn directly from the fibre source and create something useful from it. Many spinners find solace in the rhythmic motion of spinning and the tactile sensation of working with fibres. The therapeutic benefits of spinning are well known; it helps to reduce stress and promote relaxation, making it a perfect hobby for those looking to unwind and create. Our spinning workshops and spinning classes are ideal for beginners and those wanting to master this rewarding craft.

My Spinning Journey

I learned to spin at 13 from a family friend in New Zealand, who spun lace-weight yarn and crocheted wedding dresses. The joy of spinning yarn has stayed with me since.

In my late 20s, I bought a second-hand spinning wheel and brought it, along with fleeces, to Northern Ireland when I moved in 2005.

Over the years, I’ve collected spinning wheels from New Zealand, Ireland, and Holland. Many are cherished pieces, and I use my Ashford wheels to teach one to one spinning classes.
